Aoi Sasai
Aoi Sasai’s paintings of deformed trees against neutral gray landscapes are praised highly for their unique approach. The primary motifs in her work have continued to be familiar, everyday plants, such as trees and hedges that grow in backyards. These are not wild trees growing high up on mountains or deep in the forest, but those that people intentionally plant and maintain. This exhibition will present new works by Sasai for the first time in two years, introducing nine oil paintings on canvas that depict tress growing in parks.

Public parks, which are open to all and to be enjoyed freely, appear different depending on the time of day and season. In these new paintings, Sasai attempts to capture spaces where people can relax peacefully without thinking about anything in particular. Though she is an artist consciousness of the boundary between the self (here) and the outside world (there), Sasai recognizes that this separation is gradually disappearing. What previously appeared as dark backgrounds hidden in shadow are now expressed as gentle gray backdrops. In addition, the leaves on the trees appear painted in a hues similar to the background tones, minimizing the differentiation between the tree and the background while giving the impression of overall flatness. Sasai, who has expanded her focus from privately owned gardens to include public parks, has crossed a personal boundary and is proceeding toward a place that has hereto remained hidden.

Aoi Sasai was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1986. She is a graduate of the Postgraduate Course in Painting at Musashino Art University Department of Painting.
