The Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions is an annual film and art festival held in Ebisu, Tokyo that features exhibitions, film screenings, live performances, and other events. It is a highly unique festival that examines the question, “What is a visual image?” through a diverse range of artworks and programs converging from around Japan and overseas. This 9th edition of the festival is the first to be held since the reopening of Tokyo Photographic Art Museum and it will encompass the entire museum space, while also spreading to venues used while the museum was undergoing its overhaul.

The development of video and media technology has not only altered the appearance of the world but has also influenced our bodies and the manner in which society views them. We are part of a society connected through a global network, simultaneously in contact with numerous individuals. As we freely share information with unspecified numbers of people, the manner of our relationships and our behavior is changing significantly. We live firmly in an age of reproducibility, existing in simultaneous multiplicity, which poses the question: what may be considered original? As multiple parts and elements are woven together, the “future,” which is here, happening now, is continuously being shaped.

Under the theme “Multiple Future,” this ninth festival explores the characteristics of video and the reproductive technology that it embodies, questioning the effects that this has on individuals and the development of society as a whole.

Venues: Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Maison Franco-Japonaise, The Garden Room, Ebisu Garden Place Center Plaza and others local spaces.
