Kimiyo Mishima “Early Works”

Artists

Kimiyo Mishima
Kimiyo Mishima began producing paintings in the 1950s, and from the 1960s onward started using collage elements in her paintings, incorporating materials such as print articles and advertisements from Japanese and overseas magazines and newspapers. Following this, she explored various techniques such as silkscreen printing and etching, later also making sculptural ceramic works based on newspaper articles from the early 1970s and thereafter.
Mishima’s signature style is to use everyday “garbage,” such as newspapers and advertisements, drinks cans, discarded manga, telephone directories, and industrial waste, to create her works. This exhibition will present Mishima’s early oil paintings, photographs she took of piled up newspapers, and the copperplate prints she made from these, allowing viewers to understand her process before her work underwent a transition to the three-dimensional. There will also be some sculptural collage works produced by her in the mid 1980s using found objects.
