Hiroyuki Yamada
Hiroyuki Yamada was born in Kagawa prefecture in 1975. After a visit to Central America in 2011 where he became curious about a local community with strong religious devotion to and faith in the unseen, Yamada began producing photography. Since early on in his career, he has selected locations that stand out as having residual memories to exhibit his photography installations, such as the Hiroshima branch of the old Japan Bank.
In his practice, Yamada produces multilayered photos. On occasion he adds words, symbols, and iconography directly onto the surface of prints in order to highlight the historical time and context framing the subject and build a relationship between the viewer and the viewed. His images are distinct, challenging traditional conceptions of photography by using new methods of image construction. He was awarded the Tokyo Frontline Award 2016 Grand Prize, which included an invitation to exhibit at the gallery.

Last year, Yamada participated in Arles International Photo Festival (Xiamen, China, 2016), where he covered the walls with monochrome inkjet prints of various sizes from the ceiling to the floor. He then rubbed on the surfaces to create scars, through which the context-free individual images were transformed through his performance into a connected series. In this exhibition, he will exhibit the prints used at the performance and photos from the last six years, categorized by individuals nouns such as ‘Light,’ ‘Grid,’ ‘Newspaper.’ Presented as documentary photography, with each collection composed as a series and exhibited in a black case, these images subjectively records his surroundings as an expression of cosmic space. The archive format mixes and fuses these images together to shed light on our society (Nosotros) and connect us all.
