Installation Kaguya: One Sixth

“The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” was written around 1000 years ago and is considered to be the oldest extant Japanese fictional narrative. It tells the story of Princess Kaguya, who is discovered as a baby within the stalk of a bamboo plant and raised by the man who found her, together with his wife. Once she is grown up, however, she realizes that she is not of this world, and that her people reside on the Moon. The work presented here, “Installation kaguya: One Sixth,” is informed by this text and the fact that the acceleration of gravity on the Moon is one-sixth that of what it is on Earth. It will be presented alongside costumes inspired by travel to the Moon.
