Takeji Fujishima
Takeji Fujishima (1867–1943) was an oil painter from the late-Meiji through early-Showa eras. In addition to Fujishima’s own works, this extensive exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of his birth presents Nihonga paintings by teachers he studied under in his hometown of Kagoshima, works by the Western-style painters Hosui Yamamoto and Seiki Kuroda whom he learned from, and works by Fernand Cormon and Carolus-Duran, both artists he admired while traveling abroad. This show reaffirming the achievements and scope of Fujishima’s work presents 160 paintings to be alternated throughout the exhibition period.
