Tara Books is an independent publishing house based in Chennai, South India that creates handmade picture books akin to crafted objects. Since its establishment in 1994, it has published a number of titles, focusing mainly on picture books, with an emphasis on paintings, text, graphic design, and book building. Their beautiful handcrafted publications typically feature multicolored silkscreen prints on thick handmade paper and have attracted much attention around the globe.
Though printing techniques and the methods by which books are constructed tend to be hidden from view, the essence of Tara Books is in its editorial policy; when working with folk artists they visit various places in India, meeting with the painters and working alongside them. They also work together with overseas artists and designers in countries such as Japan, seeing this as a way to challenge established approaches, and address social problems and the situation of commercial art in India, for example.
By introducing titles such as “The Night Life of Trees” and “Waterlife,” which are well-known in Japan, this exhibition shines the spotlight on Tara Books’ method of book construction and their handmade book building process with folk artists. Enjoy the array of picture books, original artwork, photographs, videos, and other 300 or so objects on show that invite you to learn about their publishing activities.
