This event has ended.
Mitsuhiro Okamoto was born in 1968, Kyoto, and Ichiro Irie was born in 1969, Tokyo and raised in Los Angeles. During their youth, there were secondhand bookstores, record stores, movie theaters and knick-knack shops that stocked all manner of odd items in their respective hometowns. Such shops proved to have quite an influence on both artists, serving as a fountain of stimuli and inspiration. Born considerably later, in 1986, Ryota Shimamoto has been influenced by the subcultures of earlier generations, including that of his older brothers.
Decades later, Irie and Okamoto both went on to become art teachers of students who are internet natives - they download their favorite tracks to their iPods and play online games. The culture that artists born in previous generations consider important differs from that valued by the younger generations, which tends to lean toward the latest, cutting-edge forms. Both groups of artists look in towards each other from their respective viewpoints at opposite ends.
In this exhibition, Irie, Okamoto and Shimamoto will present their artworks, all of which contain a measure of nostalgia and express unfading mysteries, for every generation of contemporary artists carries with them the knowledge of the archaic vanguards that came before.
