I am a curious person. Having spent my early adulthood in different countries, curiosity has been a force in my life. It always triggers new voyages in my work, encouraging myself to find a way of breaking the boundaries. Since I moved from Korea with my first camera in hand, photography has been serving me as a way of dealing with new and unfamiliar languages – both spoken and observed.

Photography and its physicality continue to be a huge theme regardless of how the subject matter changes in each project. Whether it’s an editorial assignment or a personal project, I take great pleasure in the manual involvement of the process.
For the project ‘Mrs.Dalloway’, negative films are physically cut and collaged, then loosely scanned. In the world of ubiquitous images, I am exploring the reproduction quality of photography, and its undeniable relationship with paintings. I intentionally take photographs of modern paintings and use them as palettes for my own work. Parts of these negatives are taken from the museums such as The Louvre, The Centre Pompidou, The Metropolitan museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art – where I often find myself being dominantly surrounded by male artists’ work.

The project carries an agenda to create unique visual language. Meanwhile, they are touching on the issues of reproduction, consumption, patriarchy and obscurities of our visual vocabularies developed by photography.

Ina Jang

Jang’s creative method includes layering cut-outs physically and digitally to create a playful photograph. Her new work ‘Mrs. Dalloway’ refers to English writer Virginia Woolf, one of the foremost modernist authors of the twentieth century. Jang’s collage work is composed of cut-out film negatives of contemporary paintings that hint at the female characters or scenery from Woolf’s novel. The abstract-like images create a feeling of escape from the definitive, inviting the viewer to stand between issues associated with photography. Issues explored include the boundaries of various problems surrounding photographs: for example, appearance, originality and reproduction; gender relations, such as observing and being observed; and uniqueness and anonymity.
On the opening day of the exhibition, a reception and a talk event by the artist will be held.
