In 1977 the Sompo Japan Fine Art Foundation established the Outstanding Up-and-Coming Artists Award for emerging artists and the Seiji Togo Memorial Museum Grand Prix Award for established artists. The Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Art Award was later introduced along with FACE, a competition open to the general public, as an extension of the foundation’s mission to act as, “[a] gateway to the art world regardless of age or affiliation.”
This 5th edition of FACE saw impressive entries from 902 emerging artists throughout Japan. From these, the jury members carefully selected 71 works of international appeal. The Grand Prix award-winning work will become a part of the museum collection, while this artwork and the three recipients of the Excellent Work Award will exhibit their works as part of the group show featuring 12 artists, which is held regularly every three years. The works presented here cover a range of techniques, including oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, mineral pigment painting, printmaking, mixed media and so on. During the exhibition attendees will be able to cast their vote for the Audience Award.
