Mio Matsuda
“Singing traveler” Mio Matsuda introduces a range of traditional folk songs discovered on her travels through Brazil, Hawaii and Japan.
As author of the CD book “Creole Japan,” Matsuda uses the word “Creole” to conjure to the diversity and regionalism inherent to Japanese culture. In her own voice she vividly relates the memories and personal histories of various groups through sharing the songs they sung while laboring and in prayer. Hear about the experiences of the Japanese who traveled to Hawaii and Brazil, the Christians who lived in Iojima Island in Nagasaki Prefecture, and the Kobiki of Ijya in Tokushima Prefecture. Matsuda moves away from the uniform image of Japan to express the diverse “Creole” landscape these songs reflect.
In addition to hearing the folk songs, you can also see videos about their history, music records, and other documents collected by her in this exhibition. Experience the lives of others through music.
