Naobummi Seimiya
Though the late woodcut printer Naobummi Seimiya (1917-1991) was born 100 years ago, the quiet poetry of his works continues to fascinate viewers. At the center of his practice is a deep empathy for people’s occupations and for sharing the unlimited possibilities of the imagination with others. This exhibition following a quarter of a century after his death explores the essence of image making and looking.
The woodblock prints for which Seimiya is principally known are often clearly distinguished from his other works, which include watercolors, glass paintings, and monotypes. This exhibition will pursue the transitions his artistic practice underwent in chronological order, looking at the different forms of expression this poet used to render his poetry in pictorial form.
