Life is Short, Fall in Love - Hiromi Matsuo x Taisho Love Files

Yayoi Museum

Hiromi Matsuo
Japan’s Taisho era (1912-1926) was full of frequent reports about romantic love affairs. Charismatic actress Sumako Matsui committed suicide straight after the death of her theater director Hogetsu Shimamura, while singer Asao Hara was involved in a notorious scandal with international physicist Atsushi Ishihara, whom she was accused of having seduced. This exhibition will introduce shocking love stories of the period through photos and newspaper articles accompanied by stories from novels and illustrations. There will also be a section presenting drawings inspired by these Taisho era love stories by contemporary illustrator Hiromi Matsuo.
