European Wooden Toys - Focusing on toys from Germany, Switzerland and Scandinavia

Meguro Museum of Art
Finished
This exhibition introduces the charm of wooden toys from the perspectives of “look,” “play,” and “know,” presenting around 400 wooden toys produced by various makers primarily in the years following the Second World War. In addition to showing mass produced items by manufacturers, the “look” section will also exhibit toys created by small-scale workshops. The focus will be on toys made in the Erz Mountains region in central Europe, near the border of Germany and the Czech Republic, where traditional wooden toy production in present day Europe flourishes. It will also introduce the unique reifendrehen technique - where wood is worked on a lathe to produce a wooden ring, the cross-section of which forms the outline of the figures - that was born in this region. For the “play” section, there will be an area where you can handle toys just like the ones on exhibit. Finally, for the “know” section, Christian Werner of Reifendrehwerk Christian Werner in Seifen, Germany will give demonstrations showing the valuable process by which some of these toys are produced.
