Kyuyo Ishikawa “Calligraphy!”

Ueno Royal Museum
Finished

Artists

Kyuyo Ishikawa
As an outstanding calligrapher, critic Kyuyo Ishikawa has far exceeded the standards established in postwar avant-garde calligraphy, boldly reinvigorating the relationship between the expression of words and the brush by creating magical and fascinating worlds where his painted strokes become like music. To commemorate his 1000th painting, the exhibition will present an array of works by Ishikawa, ranging from experimental pieces produced in his youth based on classic Japanese texts such as “The Tale of Genji,” to some of his latest works.
