Art Brut? Outsider Art? Both? Thinking About Their Value

Gyre Gallery
Finished
The work of artists with psychological and intellectual disabilities has been drawing the spotlight in recent years. Some people call these works Art Brut, others Outsider Art. This exhibition questions how society values these works of art, and how they should be categorized. Do “artists with disabilities” need their own category? What exactly is a “disability,” anyway? Let’s consider overturning preconceptions about what falls “inside” and “outside” our social frameworks. The energy and power these works emanate has the potential to set us all free.
