To answer the question “What did Toshima see while in Spain,” this exhibition presents not only an important collection of the artist’s outstanding oil paintings, but also his self-portraits and photography from his 30 years spent there.
Many of Toshima’s surviving works are landscapes or photographs of people. Comparing his paintings and photography from his time in Spain reveals how he, as someone who loved the country, viewed his life and work and the people and places he encountered there through his own eyes.
