Artists

Noritaka Tatehana
Noritaka Tatehana, known for his “Heelless Shoes,” is a leading artist and fashion designer whose contemporary works remain firmly rooted Japanese tradition and art history. These pieces inspired by the camellia flowers of Kakuon-ji Temple in Kamakura display a Japanese sense of life and death in their aesthetics and craftsmanship. Tatehana’s works also include: The Floating World series with yuzen-dyed motifs of courtesans’ high-heeled geta shoes, the Embossed Painting series covering acrylic paintings in a mirror-like silver coating, and the Hairpin series of 160-cm carvings modeled after kanzashi hair pieces worn by prostitutes. All of these works possess a powerful presence and evoke the vibrancy of their materials.
