In his animation works, Tatsuhiro Ariyoshi explores life’s secrets, even looking at the taboos inherent to our reasons for existing. Animation is a technique suitable for expressing such existential chaos, which may be hard to represent in words. Unlike the rather dark and surreal works of animators such as Jan Svankmajer and the Quay Brothers, however, Ariyoshi’s animations are more straightforward and close to real sensation that we experience directly. The aesthetic elements of his moving images also communicate effectively as drawings, as you can see for yourself here.
