This is Shanghai-based media artist Lu Yang’s first large scale exhibition in Japan. An artist symbolic of the “Millennial” generation, Yang expresses her ideas about science and spirituality using digital media such as video, installation, animation, games and 3D CG. In 2015, she was chosen to exhibit at the China Pavilion at Venice Biennale, and in the summer of 2017 participated in the Asia Corridor Contemporary Art Exhibition at Kyoto Art Center, here introducing a new and unforgettable high impact video work that made her presence known.
Considering the human body as something common to all individuals regardless of cultural or social background, Yang boldly features bodies and organs, as well as reactions in the brain and nervous system as subjects in her work. Though at times these expressions can become the focal point, her work as a whole is full of empathy for the fragility of life, looking to resolve feelings caused by distortions that prevail in contemporary society in a physical way.
In this exhibition, Yang will present a video installation on the topic of gods as objects of faith, as well as a brand new video work created in the style of a Chanmomo (member of the Japanese idol group Band ja naimon!) music video. By focusing on subjects such as the brain and consciousness, here she humorously visualizes the boundaries between science and consciousness, reality and the imagination through elements and techniques familiar from games and other forms of entertainment.
