Momoko Jennifer Iida + Nozomu Matsumoto “Unruly”

Artists

Momoko Jennifer Iida, Nozomu Matsumoto
Momoko Jennifer Iida is a painter that employs a unique approach in order to control the flow and layering of the oil medium. She pours liquid oil paints onto the surface of flat canvases, fixing images while allowing the oils to flow and build numerous layers. Though the application of paint is carefully controlled by the artist, Iida allows gravity to transform the color and shape of the paint as though it were an organic organism. Here elements of the accidental and layers of time counter the will of the artist.
While Nozomu Matsumoto is known for his sound design and work on music tracks, his activities as part of the curation unit EBM(T) formed together with Nile Koetting, where he has contributed to events such as “Tokyo Art Meeting VI “TOKYO” - Sensing the Cultural Magma of the Metropolis” (The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo), are also recognized. In the work presented here, Matsumoto addresses the theme of the voice within sound, and where it emanates from, exploring the manifestation of aggressive degeneration and the ability to resist adaption to changes in the social environment.

The word “unruly” can mean uncontrollable, expressing that someone does not play by the rules, but for this exhibition it is related specifically to the idea of unruly places - to geographic entities such as disappearing islands, hidden deserts and unidentified cities. This exhibition addresses the abstract concept of spaces that have never existed.
