MAM Screen 005: Yoshinori Niwa Selected Video Works

Mori Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Yoshinori Niwa
This exhibition will showcase video works by artist Yoshinori Niwa (b. 1982). Setting his work in the streets and public spaces of various countries, as well as locations with political connections, Niwa stages social and historical interventions by engaging in what at first glance appear to be meaningless and absurd acts and schemes. He will present a selection of these happenings on video in their entirety, including their unexpected outcomes resulting from negotiation, its failures and reactions from others present. A special edition of Niwa’s four-part “Communism” series (“Tossing Socialist in the Air in Romania,” “Looking for Vladimir Lenin at Moscow Apartments,” “Proposing Holding up Karl Marx to Japanese Communist Party,” “Celebrating Karl Marx’s Birthday with Japanese Communist Party”) has been re-edited for this event. Reconsider value systems and their significance in our society through the “nonsensical” actions presented here in these works.
