Mayumi Hosokura
Mayumi Hosokura is a Japanese female photographer noted primarily for her style that interweaves nudes, still objects, and scenery from suburban Tokyo. In recent years, she has expanded the geographic scope of her work across the Asian continent while continuing to attract attention both in Japan and overseas for her ability to depict the delicate beauty of her subject matter in great detail. Meanwhile, she also tackles the challenge of utilizing new approaches, such as telling fictional stories through series of images, and creating installations out of objects and imagery.
Published and released in September 2017 to great acclaim, particularly in Europe, “Jubilee” is a new compilation of photographs shot between 2012 and 2017 in Japan and other East Asian countries, such as Taiwan and China. While linking back to her roots in portrait photography, Hosokura’s current style incorporates scenery featuring letters, fragments of cityscapes, young nude models, and the texture of different plants. Each of these elements is photographed with an equal focus, but in utilizing various combinations of natural light and color filters the artist manages to carefully work out an order in which to capture each subject at the perfect moment. The series is inspired by the labyrinth flashbacks in Robbe-Grillet’s novels and contains images that present themselves in a quietly festive rhythm of repeated transformation and reproduction.
On display at this exhibition is an installation comprised of select photographs from “Jubilee” and several new video works. Against the backdrop of a history of photography that has been dominated by female nudes, Hosokura has focused on male nudes consistently since her early “Kazan” series, expanding this in her work with androgynous-looking models that are difficult to classify by gender. In this way, she makes implications about sexuality and gender issues. While continuing to work across Asia, her contribution to the “Kawasaki Report” column in a monthly magazine started back in 2015 presented her with the opportunity to photograph young people living in the multicultural environment of “foreigner communities.” Through this experience the artist explains that the concept of national borders has gradually disappeared from her consciousness. With each crossing of images and subjects in her work, the boundaries between male and female, organic and inorganic, still and moving become increasingly ambiguous, thereby encouraging the viewer to question the validity of such categories.
