Though Hiroyuki Yamada trained in Tsukuba and set up a studio in Shigaraki, developing unique ideas and impressive technical skills that make him a leading creative of his generation, it is hard to say that his abilities have been fully appreciated to date. “Roots” can at times hold artists back, and at others give them a powerful boost. In the case of Yamada, his “roots” extend uncontrollably as if by their own volition. The masterpiece “Tsuchi Daikon (Earth radish)” is a series of works that condenses Yamada’s brilliant approach, packing a fiery punch like the vegetable itself. His alternative approach extends past the execution of the works themselves to inform how they exist as artworks once they’ve been completed; Yamada has made his work available for purchase both at home and overseas at unmanned stations akin to the produce stalls you see stocked with vegetables in rural Japan, which run entirely on good faith. This vegetable has become deified in Yamada’s eyes, his giant radish appearing at Biwako Biennale last year drawing much attention. The current solo exhibition continues in this vein, presenting an installation organized around a radish deity, as well as ceramic works from his latest woodblock print series.
