Artists

Masaharu Futoyu, Satoshi Hoshi
This project called “Dougyou-san-nin” was launched by painter Satoshi Hoshi and artist Futoyu Masaharu in 2015. It is based on an idea of “pilgrimage” in which Hoshi traveled around eighty-eight temples in Shikoku and painted each one over the course of 42 days and 1400 kilometers. Futoyu accompanied him, documenting and filming Hoshi as he went along. Thus, two art projects are going on within this journey.
Generally, pilgrimage should done by alone, but with the Buddist monk Kukai accompanying the pilgrim, a journey known as “Dougyo-ni-nin” (Going with a person). This project takes over the idea and reinterprets it as “Dougyo-san-nin”(Going with three people). Because they brought a new definition of “Dougyo-ni-nin”, which is potentially off from the historical meaning of it, some may find it offensive while others are supportive. All of these unpredictable results and reactive processes influence the artists and the project in depth.
