Kengo Kuma, Rogier Uitenboogaart
Established in September 2014, “Future of Creation” is an exhibition series curated by four leading creators in the worlds of art and architecture: Toshio Shimizu (art director), Ryohei Miyata (goldsmith), Toyo Ito (architect), Kengo Kuma (architect). Taking place over three-month intervals, the exhibitions present progressive ideas from various disciplines. For the 12th edition, architect Kengo Kuma will collaborate with washi (Japanese paper) craftsman Rogier Uitenboogaart. Uitenboogaart works out of the small town of Yusuhara in Kochi Prefecture. Located 1483m above sea level and surrounded by the majestic mountains of Shikoku Karst, 91% of the land in the town is occupied by forest. Kuma’s relationship with Yusuhara dates back more than 30 years, starting with “Hotel above the clouds,” his first ever design for wooden-framed architecture. He went on to design further buildings for the town, the interiors of which utilized the washi produced by Uitenboogaart. In this exhibition you can see various types of tosa washi paper covering the entire gallery space, creating a cave-live atmosphere where you can experience the depths of this soft yet powerful handcrafted material. In addition, there will also be various items on display, such as objects produced by Uitenboogaart, tosa washi paper samples, paper making tools and plants. The method by which this paper is created is now registered by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Explore the charm of this paper through the work of Uitenboogaart.
