Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Nobuyoshi Araki “Photographoary: Photo-Mad Old Man A Turning 77 on 5.25.17” from May 25 to July 1. The exhibition, which will feature approximately 900 works comprising 116 color and 720 black and white photographs from the titular series, will be Araki’s 24th solo exhibition with the gallery.

This is a time of the elderly. People who fight against aging, saying, “I don’t want to be seen as an old person,” are out. This is precisely the time to be proud of and exhibit the transformations caused by age. There are many things you can’t learn without aging. It’s natural that older people are more attractive than the young, because we’re experienced.

Previously, Araki has affirmatively incorporated his aging process into his works to ceaselessly enrich his oeuvre. Araki, who has been confronted with, and overcome multiple illnesses such as prostate cancer and central retinal artery occlusion, which caused him to lose sight in his right eye, lives by transforming the changes in his body and life into fuel for photographing daily. Through this practice, he has produced an enormous number of new works. Like the person who grows more attractive with age, Araki’s new work is more intensely charged with the Eros and Thanatos instincts than ever before. A catalogue will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
