Michael Toenges’ paintings are recognizable for their diverse color palate and the huge volume of oil paint that appears layered on the surface of the canvas or wooden board. With these characteristics his paintings appear much like relief sculptures. Toenges applies many layers of paint in various colors to create very rich surfaces. As each new stroke of paint is added individually and separately, colors applied previously are not completely covered, leaving glimpses remaining here and there. In his early years Toenges created figurative paintings such as landscapes and still lifes. Realizing that his main concern is the arrangement, contrast and construction of colors, he later freed himself from the mimetic representation of forms and images to explore the color and materiality of paint.
Toenges is an artist familiar with the history of European painting, from the medieval period, though the Renaissance, up to German Expressionism. For this second exhibition, the artist has reproduced works by Old Masters such as Giotto, Fra Angelico, Botticelli and Goya through experimenting with the traditional usage of colors. Toenges does not usually make preparatory sketches, instead applying paint directly to the surface of his work without any predetermined plan; he paints each stroke carefully but fearlessly. According to the artist, “it happens often that a work which was going very well until yesterday is suddenly ruined by one touch made today,” where he adds “maybe this painting is finished but it is possible a small change may happen…” A selection of paintings and large works on paper will be presented here.
