Arakawa Africa is an annual art festival in Arakawa ward, Tokyo. This year’s three-day festival spotlights photography and video art by artists from Africa and of African descent. The YaPhoto @Arakawa Africa is an art project focusing on intersections of culture between Africa and Tokyo’s Shitamachi area. Making Histories Visible is a visual art project from the Contemporary Art Center of The University of Central Lancashire.
Several photographers from Cameroon presenting work in Japan for the first time are featured. Blaise Djilo’s series “Feou Kake” (2016) documents harvest celebrations in northern Cameroon. Max Mbakop photographs the emergence of roller-skating and BMX as part of the Douala’s urban cultures. Steve Mvondo’s “Crown of Beauty” portraits of Cameroonian women in colorful head wraps reflect their shifting social identities.
This year’s Arakawa Africa also includes a Tokyo edition of Digital Africa, a London-based collaboration between Open Source and Vortex that has compiled videos from African and immigrant artists to tell individual and collective stories through a visual culture overcoming language barriers.
