In recent years, there has been growing global interest in what is termed “socially engaged art.” The terms applies to work by artists actively involved in trying to bring about social change through dialogue and collaboration with the public. Their aims are diverse, ranging from relatively small conscious changes in daily behavior to larger-scale institutional change. Their modes of expression connect specific, concrete problems and issues in society with creative acts such as painting, sculpture, video, music, performance and theater. This often results in a very unique approach that leads some to question whether it can be considered art or not. Irrespective of this, it must be acknowledged that each action taken by those involved it committed to deep social engagement on a conscious level. For example, Pedro Reyes, one of the artists participating in this exhibition, has led an appeal to leave behind gun-led society by launching a campaign in 2008 to collect weapons that can be transformed into shovels and musical instruments.
Synchronizing with global trends, artists involved in socially engaged practice have been increasing in Japan in recent years. This exhibition focuses on the activities of Japanese artists strongly aware of social concerns, something that has become especially prominent since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. It will introduce their practice alongside representative projects from overseas in order to offer context for viewing this type of art in Japan. In addition to presenting documentation of past activities, the exhibition will introduce the work of artists developing new projects alongside this event.
