Architect Masato Otaka and the Kamakura Annex

Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura Annex

Artists

Masato Otaka
The Kamakura Annex was designed by the architect Masato Otaka (1923-2010) and opened in 1984. The building was in stark contrast to the light-hearted impression of the Kamakura building (designed by Junzo Sakakura, closed in 2016). Here, thematic exhibitions featuring works mainly from the museum collection have been held and contemporary sculptures – one of the museum’s fortes – are introduced in the front garden. The activities undertaken over the past thirty-three years (prior to the closing of the Annex for renovations) are looked back on through the collection and reference materials exhibited at the Kamakura Annex, with focus on Otaka’s work from the point of view of its relation with Le Corbusier, Kunio Maekawa, and Teiichi Hijikata.
