Launched in 2002, the Kokuyo Design Award is a competition that aims to promote manufacturing from a users point of view, developing products such as stationery items and office furniture. A competition theme is set each year and winning designs are actively commercialized.

The theme for this 14th edition was “How to live.” At a time when we are inundated with daily use items, the competition asked entrants to propose something genuinely necessary for the present age and society we live in. This exhibition will showcase the grand prize winning design, which was announced in November 2016, as well as the three other award winning proposals. Selected by popular vote, the winning entry challenges the viewpoint of what is considered stationery, reviewing the relationship between people and things while suggesting a new way of thinking about daily life.
