Life-forms in the ocean often appear to be splendid examples of naturally occurring art created by the sea. There is a sense of divinity in how individual creatures can survive such a harsh environment.
In the waters surrounding Izu Peninsula south of Tokyo, the underwater environment feels like some kind of geopark, where lava from erupting volcanoes once flowed and the creatures living there, which have existed since the Earth formed, are replete with mysterious shapes and colors. Below the water’s surface there is a world of excitement and mystery that cannot be glimpsed from the land. See how this is explored in Katsutoshi Ito’s works.
