Gyokudo Kawai
Gyokudo Kawai (1873-1957) loved the mountains of Japan and passionately depicted the lives of the people living among the country’s abundant nature. This retrospective marking the 60th anniversary of his death will trace Kawai’s journey as a painter. It will focus on numerous masterpieces from throughout his 70-year career, including those from his early years, like “Ukai (cormorant fishing)” (1895, Yamatane Museum of Art), as well as works that broke new ground, such as the Taisho era piece “Kohaku ume (red and white plums)” (1919, Gyokudo Art Museum) and other Rimpa paintings. There will also be some mature works on show, namely “Saiu (colored rain)” (1940, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), and pieces from late in his career, such as “Saotome” (1945, Yamatane Museum of Art) and “Yane kusa o karu (Harvesting roof thatching),” which demonstrate Kawai’s pastoral style.
Composing haiku and poetry played an important role throughout Kawai’s life, manifest in his love of haiku as a child and his publication of the collection “Tama no kusaya (Thatched huts of Tama)” in his latter years. Discover the real attraction of this artist through his Japanese-style nihonga paintings, written words, and his exchanges with other artists and those closest to him.
