This exhibition will give an overview of the history of Western-style Japanese painting against the backdrop of nineteenth-century British art by painters such as Turner and Constable, and French Impressionist works by Renoir, Monet, Sisley and Pissaro. It will look at the work of Meiji period (1868–1912) artists such as Yuichi Takahashi who laid the foundations of Western-style painting in Japan, as well as work produced by artists negotiating the gap between the nation and the individual throughout the upheaval of the early twentieth century. The practice of postwar artists such as Yoshishige Saito and Kazuo Shiraga will also be explored. More than 100 works by key Western-style painters in Japan will be showcased, bringing together modern European and contemporary Japanese works from the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki and Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts.
