Launched in 2000, Spiral Independent Creators Festival (SICF 18) continues its annual endeavor to uncover and support emerging young creatives in an open-call contest showcasing the work of 100 groups and individuals in a wide cross-section of contemporary art and design. Works are selected by a panel of Japanese cultural leaders, and awards include the Grand Prix, Runner-Up Grand Prix, and Jury Prize. Visitors are also invited to vote for a recipient for the Audience Prize.
The 18th edition of SICF will present paintings, sculptural works, installations, photographs, media art, fashion, crafts and other artworks that defy existing genres. Where the limit for the number of participants was 100 in previous years, this year will showcase work by 150 different groups and individuals. The event will be held across six days and divided into three parts. The Spiral Garden on the first floor will act as an additional venue to the usual Spiral Hall, while a performance program titled “SICF 18 PLAY” has also been established this year, giving participants a chance to express themselves freely in a manner of their choice in a 10 meter space within a 20 minute time allocation. Workshops and a program of related talk events will run throughout the exhibition period, and an exhibition of works by SICF17 winners will be hosted in Mina-to on the first floor of the Spiral building.
