Takashi Chida
Artist and art educator Takashi Chida was born in Kiso, Nagano Prefecture in 1914 before relocating to the city of Yokohama as a young boy. He passed away at the age of 73 on the penultimate day of his 1988 exhibition at Hara Museum Arc. In addition to his continuous artistic output, Chida established an “Atelier for Making” at Gumyo-ji Temple, Yokohama in 1965 based on his idea that everyone and anyone can be an artist. The space offered a space for children and adults to gain an independent artistic education and exercise their power to create. In the 1960s, at a time when the idea of the “workshop” had not yet been popularized in Japan, Chida was often designating spaces within his exhibitions whereby people were invited to create their own works. This exhibition will present paintings, poetry and documentation regarding Chiba’s educational activities.
