Toshiya Shimozawa “Re-birth”

LIXIL Gallery 1 & 2
Finished

Artists

Toshiya Shimozawa
The theme of Toshiya Shimozawa’s work is “re-birth,” referring to the reproduction of life. His dynamic unglazed ceramic works in red clay emphasize the texture of the soil, which is from Hokkaido in the north of Japan and rich in iron. The unrefined clay used retains its impurities meaning that the rough traces of big cracks and the flames from the firing process are clearly visible. Shimozawa’s predominantly pillar shaped works have started to become more voluminous recently, breathing natural power into their regenerative weathered appearance. Five pieces including new works such as a 140 cm tall structure and a thin two-dimensional work will be exhibited.
