Finished

Artists

Tsune Nakamura, Ryusei Kishida, Naojiro Harada, Bakusen Tsuchida, Shunso Hishida et al.
At present, the museum collection consists of over 13,000 items. The display presented in this exhibition will change continually throughout the exhibition period, introducing around 200 pieces in the 3000㎡ gallery space across the three floors of the museum. Displays will be renewed every two to three months with significant changes meaning you are bound to encounter something new every time you visit.

Although the MOMAT collection focuses on modern art from Japan, an understanding of Western modern art is indispensable in seeing the influence that it had on Japanese artists. Explore the relationship between Japanese art and that of the West from the Meiji Period (1968-1912) onward through artists such Tsuguharu Foujita, who worked in Paris, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi, who was active in the United States. The second floor of the exhibition will focus on trends that emerged in art in the 1960s and 1970s, presenting recently acquired works by Robert Smithson, On Kawara, Genpei Akasegawa and others.

The “Highlight Corner,” where you’ll find a variety of well-known works, and the “Nihon-ga (Japanese-style Painting) Corner” also promise a rich viewing experience. Notable pieces include Kaburaki Kiyokata’s “Boating Excursion on the Sumida River” (on display May 27 - Jul. 17) and Kawabata “Ryushi’s Flaming Grass” (on display Jul. 19 - Sep. 10).
