This is the fifth and final event in a series of exhibitions that have been running at Shiseido Gallery each spring since 2013. It presents work by participants of the Seventh Tsubaki-kai: Genpei Akasegawa, Naoya Hatekeyama, Rei Naito, Zon Ito, and Ryoko Aoki. Tsubaki-kai is an artists’ exhibition group that was established in 1947 as part of the reopening of Shiseido Gallery after its temporary closure during the Second World War. With each iteration, the membership of the Tsubaki-kai has changed, this year marking its seventieth anniversary.

The thematic subtitle “Shoshin (beginner’s mindset)” was chosen with reference to the recovery efforts that followed the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake, with the group feeling these invited opportunities to reconsider what it means to start over and begin things anew. The Shinmeikai Japanese Dictionary defines “shoshin” as the purity of thought and feeling experienced when first engaging or attempting something. The Noh master Zeami, in his treatises on art, urged the importance of never forgetting the beginner’s mindset and described this as a mental stance useful in confronting new experiences of all kinds throughout the various stages of life. Reflecting the idea of renewal, graphic designer Masayoshi Nakajo has created a new Tsubaki-kai exhibition logo each year.
