Kensuke Karasawa
Sculptures are produced through processes such as chiseling and carving. Statues, on the other hand, are usually created from molds into which the primary material is poured so that it may take the shape of what was previously carved away. In his work Kensuke Karasawa carves wood and fills the impressions with paraffin wax. This translucent malleable material takes on the shape of he cavities and gives visual form to the wood that has be carved out. Using this approach, a mold is created akin to that which is used in the production of a statue. If the wood is the primary material in these works, what does this make the wax that replaces it? It could be referred to as a shadow of the carved out image.
