The Quay Brothers
Since 1979, the Quay Brothers have produced more than seventy animated films, including feature films combining collage, stop-motion, live-action, and special effects. Their masterpieces include titles such as “Street of Crocodiles” (1986), a darkly humorous and bizarre fantasy. The Quay Brothers have also designed stage sets, projections and installations. This exhibition introduces the creative world of these identical twins, from their early illustration work to their stage design for animations, video works and theatrical works that have hereto been rarely introduced in Japan. It is the first full-scale retrospective exhibition in Asia of its kind.

The brothers were born in Pennsylvania, USA in 1947 as Stephen Quay and Timothy Quay and studied film and illustration respectively at Philadelphia College of Art in 1965, later encountering an exhibition of “Polish Poster Art” while studying abroad in 1967 that would prove pivotal. They relocated to England in 1969 to attend the Royal College of Art in London. Here they were influenced strongly by Eastern European culture through Franz Kafka’s literature, Leoš Janáček’s music, and Jan Švankmajer’s video works, as is evident in the short animated films they went on to produce. The brothers continue to be based in London, active in a various fields ranging from animation and film production to television commercials and theatrical arts.
