Antoine d’Agata
“corpus” is the second solo exhibition of Antoine d’Agata organized by MEM, Tokyo. The central work in the show is a videogram that includes many still images from d’Agata’s third film “Atlas.” There is also a separate photo installation consisting of a hundred prints of self-portraits taken by the artist in the past couple decades featured. “Atlas,” which will be appearing for the first time with Japanese subtitles, will be screened on the weekends.

“Atlas” was completed in 2013 and had its world premier in 2014 at Edinburgh International Film Festival. It centers around women working in prostitution and trading drugs and consists of monologues in different languages by each of these women who share their experiences, describing the violence, agony, pleasure and pain that is part their daily lives. d’Agata has commented, “the essence of my job lies in the attitude of the photographer to what he photographs. I never wanted to accept the position of the observer who is not involved in the situation. The technique and aesthetics do not matter to me. Only the essence of what is happening is important to me…”
