Artists

Yu Takita
Showa Era manga artist Yu Takita was born and raised in downtown Tokyo’s red light district. He rose to fame with “Terajima-cho kitan (Terajima neighborhood mysteries),” where he fondly depicted the lives of those he’d grown up around, when it was serialized in 1968 in the monthly publication “Garo.” See original artwork from this title alongside color illustrations of downtown Tokyo in the years before and during the war, original drawings from his other manga, and additional related materials. Takita’s vivid memories of this nostalgic landscape leave a lasting impression.
