Eisaku Ando
Eisaku Ando was born in 1961 in downtown Tokyo. In 1986 he graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts Sculpture Department and four years later relocated to the mountains of Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture. Here he devoted himself to sculpture and surfing for the next 20 years. After moving to the coast in 2006, he lost his home, atelier, hundreds of works of art, and his dogs in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Ando now works out of Nara Prefecture and produces dynamic sculptures from logs and scrap wood with just a simple handheld axe.
