Yozo Hamaguchi
This autumn exhibition focuses on copperplate artist Yozo Hamaguchi’s lithograph works and presents a selection of diverse compositions including roughly 40 major copperplate prints.
Hamaguchi (1909-2000) developed a unique etching technique known as color mezzotint, which was based on Western printing methods and incorporated colors into a technique that was traditionally monochromatic. If you look closely at the darkness behind one of his bright red cherries, you will notice that a number of colors overlap - the deep tone being made up of four combined hues: yellow, red, blue, and black. His velvet-like works with their soft and tranquil darkness have been highly appreciated on the international stage.
Hamaguchi worked not only with copperplate printing, but also produced lithographs. Though they depict the same motifs, these works rhythmically arrange flat layers of color in a way that could not have been expressed in copperplate. It is by employing a different approach that he was able to show as different side to his subjects. In his lithographic works, the cherries - a favorite motif of Hamaguchi’s - seem to leap forward while also bouncing about.
In yet another color adventure, Hamaguchi also tried his hand at silk screen. This exhibition will introduce the one original poster that he produced along with its prototype.
