Artists

Nobuyoshi Araki
This exhibition presenting roughly 60 color photographs from Nobuyoshi Araki’s latest series, “Kayuen,” marks the artist’s 11th solo exhibition at this gallery.

Composed of the Japanese characters for “flower” (ka), “ghost” (yu), and “garden” (en), the title “Kayuen” refers to a “garden of flowers and ghosts” that Araki has created with still life photographs of lustrous floral compositions arranged together with toy dolls and monster figurines. The flowers, soon to wilt, along with the “ghosts,” erotic as well as humorous at times, serve as a metaphor for the physical and spiritual threshold of life and death and an allusive portrait of Araki’s own bodily and emotional state.

Concurrently on view with the show at Rat Hole Gallery, will be two major retrospective exhibitions of Araki’s work, at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (July 8 – September 3) and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (July 25 – September 24).
