The backstage of a Kabuki theater is filled with mysterious tension; there exists a reality and unreality with a palpable boundary between the everyday and the extraordinary. Photographer Yoshihito Sasaguchi captures the moments when two brothers in their twenties transform from their daily selves into the Kabuki roles they will perform on stage, as they have their make up applied and don their costumes.
