Towards the latter half of the Edo Period (1603–1868), when Japan was enjoying relative peace and tranquility, many people began to travel. The safety of roads had been much improved, economic development had made people’s lives more comfortable, and Jippensha Ikku’s comic novel “Tokaidochu Hizakurige (Shank’s Mare),” which tells of the misadventures of two travelers on the Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto, had stimulated people’s interest in traveling.
What is known today as Kanagawa Prefecture was scattered with temples, shrines and places the people of Edo believed to be ancient scenic spots. Enoshima and Oyama draw many spiritual pilgrims, while Kanazawa on the Sea of Japan was considered another scenic location, and Hakone became popular as a hot spring resort. It was the hustle and bustle of places such as these that were depicted by many Ukiyo-e artists.
This exhibition introduces around 200 works on the theme of Kanagawa Prefecture’s landmark post stations that were located along the original Tokaido road. Many of the sightseeing spots on view here still exist as tourist locations and will be familiar to those who are well traveled in this area.
