Utensils of Cha no yu - The World of Japanese and Chinese Tastes

Idemitsu Museum of Arts
Finished
During the Edo Period (1603 – 1868) the tea ceremony custom spread to all levels of Japanese society. Instead of sticking to the Wabi-cha style associated with Sen no Rikyu and Raku ware bowls, people began to use, Karatsu ware, Hagi ware, and vessels produced in regions throughout Japan. Tea ceremony utensils were also imported from China, the Korean Peninsula and Vietnam and used in the ceremony. This exhibition will focus on tea ceremony of the Edo era, exploring how the aesthetic sense at the center of this practice came into being.
